If I’m being completely honest, one of the best and most compelling things about Seto Kaiba’s character is that- his trauma is not really resolved within YGO itself.
What I mean by that is, normally in this kind of shonen, the Main Rival has a Tragic Backstory that with the help of The Protagonist he gets over and sometimes completely changes character.
That doesn’t happen to Kaiba. And it’s made even more apparent in DSOD.
He’s had a hell of a life. Orphaned, robbed, abused and had to struggle for most of his formative years. He’s had no one to depend on but himself, and can trust no-one but himself. Except for Mokuba of course.
All his trauma has led to him becoming a very bitter, cynical and complicated individual who doesn’t believe in fate because of how hard he’s worked to claw himself up.
But that doesn’t erase he is who he is now because of his trauma.
And most of YGO and his subtler character development is based around moving out of that- trying to find healthy connections. But as much as he changes subtly, by the end of the manga he hasn’t ‘gotten’ over his trauma. It’s something life long that is going to stick with him- the best he can do is cope with it, and learn to heal at least a little.
DSOD is powerful that way because Kaiba continues on his trauma spiral- feeling grief, anger, despair all in a very short time- before he resolves himself. Even if the ending of DSOD is ambiguous, it represents the first major step to Kaiba finding a genuine connection with someone other than his brother.
He claws himself up… and perhaps, just by trying to get to Atem in those final minutes, he can admit to himself Atem was someone he could call a friend.
But the trauma and everything that happened happened. It can’t be ignored. And I really like how it stays and informs us of Kaiba’s character.
Trading card game characters… they really are the best.
Me: I think kaiba's use of saggi the dark clown paired with crush card virus is a direct metaphor for his interpretation of his own childhood
Clowns in the traditional sense are symbolic of laughter and joy and are often associated with children. If we know one thing about kaiba it's that he has nothing but respect for children and so to perverse this symbol of childhood innocence by turning it into a literal weapon that infects and dismantles his opponents' decks is more of a reflection of himself as a child.
He could afford to replace these cards with more powerful monsters, yes, but the fact he chooses to keep them around despite this shows how he's still clinging to a past he claims to care nothing about.
Saggi is him. He is the infected clown. HE is booboo the fool.
He really does see himself as a poisoned child whose only purpose left is to destroy everyone else around him
My therapist: can we talk about LITERALLY ANYTHING other than seto kaiba for once
Yugioh - Dark Side of Dimensions Original Drawings Art Book (遊戯王 THE DARKSIDE OF DIMENSIONS アニメ原画集 -決闘者の勇姿-)!
Oooo I had to share this art book I just got with the original drawings/cells from the movie, and I am just blown away how gorgeous they are! I just love seeing the though process through it all, the sketchy lines, or even the outfit changes (did you see the one with Anzu and Yugi looking up? anzu had a different shirt on with ribbons)! XD Plus any moment I get to see Bakura just makes my day~~~Bonus at the end, looks like another poster idea with everyone on it - I would have luved to have seen that!
Pegasus upon finding out Kaiba, whose idea of revenge is putting people in a guillotine and locking them in a room with a serial killer, is on his way to kick his ass: OH NO
Pegasus realising he has to pretend he’s not intimidated by a teenager in front of his new business partners: don’t panic everything is fine it’s fine
This is probably my favorite scene in all of yugioh.
Seto is dueling Noah, who currently has Mokuba. And Seto is trying to get Mokuba to remember him. In the flashback, Seto is remembering how Mokuba helped him defeat Gozaburo by giving him his 2% of stock. In this scene, Gozaburo burst into a million pieces (similar to when a monster is defeated in Duel Monsters), then there's this adorable animation of little Seto and Mokuba looking at each other, smiling...
...And then current Seto realizes Mokuba isn't there, and he looks around for him, only to see him far away away, with Noah.
It's just an adorable scene.
I can't remember if this happens in the english dub, but Kaiba's voice DOES change when talking to Mokuba, alone. This is one example. Another is when they get trapped in the virtual world with Noah, and Mokuba expresses fear that they will never get out. Kaiba (smiling) says in a soft voice "Don't worry. I know how this system works."
Tsundere Kaiba x Atem (Battle City Edition)
I love Battle City’s SetoxAtem interactions. Especially that scenes from the manga when Atem is looking for his friends with Seto.

Seto is basically like “Forget about your friends. Focus on me. Don’t we look good together?”
Look how our boy is enjoying the moment, look at his little smile :D

Then, he’s trying so hard to convince Atem that he doesn’t enjoy
sticking with him and he’s just doing it him because… he doesn’t like
the bad guys who steal cards? I mean… didn’t he kill some guy to have
the Blue Eyes White Dragon? And, most importantly, did he forget that
he chose to stay with Atem few chapters ago? Like “we are a team but
don’t think I like you or something. I totally do it because of the
Ghouls”.
Kaiba, you basically followed him in a dark alley after he ran away from you…

Yeah, Atem. Don’t get the wrong idea. Kaiba is definitely not doing it for you.

“I’ll expect some thanks”. Why is “thanks” highlighted? What is he expecting? (Maybe my Prideshipper mind is way too perverted :p )
And then, our Kaiba boy gay-panicking when Atem is bragging about their team :p

BONUS: Watch me! Yugi!
